Louis Chevrolet, a Swiss race car driver and automotive engineer, co-founded the “Chevrolet Motor Company” in Detroit on November 3, 1911.
He founded the company with his brother Arthur Chevrolet, William C. Durant, and investment partners William Little (maker of the Little automobile), former Buick owner James H. Whiting, Dr. Edwin R. Campbell (son-in-law of Durant), and R. S. McLaughlin, CEO of General Motors in Canada in 1912.
Chevrolet automobiles are sold in almost every automotive market on the planet. Holden Special Vehicles represents Chevrolet in Oceania, having returned to the area after a 50-year absence in 2018 with the debut of the Camaro and Silverado pickup trucks (HSV was partially and formerly owned by GM subsidiary Holden, which GM retired in 2021).
Chevrolet was rebranded in Europe in 2005, with the tagline “Daewoo has grown up enough to become Chevrolet,” a move founded in GM’s attempt to develop a worldwide brand around Chevrolet. Chevrolet was reintroduced to Europe with the intention of being a mainstream value brand, with GM’s historic European standard-bearers, Opel of Germany and Vauxhall of the United Kingdom, being shifted upwards.
However, in late 2013, GM changed this decision, declaring that the brand would be phased out of Europe starting in 2016, with the exception of the Camaro and Corvette. Chevrolet automobiles were to be sold in the CIS countries, including Russia. After General Motors completed its acquisition of GM Daewoo in 2011 to form GM Korea, the Daewoo automotive name was phased out in South Korea and replaced with Chevrolet.
Chevrolet manufactures and sells a wide range of vehicles in North America, from subcompact cars to medium-duty commercial trucks. Because of Chevrolet’s global prominence and brand recognition, ‘Chevrolet,’ ‘Chevy,’ or ‘Chev’ is sometimes used as a synonym for General Motors or its products, such as the GM LS1 engine, which is popularly known by the name or a version thereof of its progenitor, the Chevrolet small-block engine.
