The FSO Polonez is a car that was designed in Poland in partnership with Fiat and manufactured by Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych between 1978 and 2002. It was built on the Polski Fiat 125p platform and featured Giorgetto Giugiaro’s revolutionary hatchback design.
It came in a number of body types, including two- and four-door compact cars, station waggons, and commercial versions that could be used as a pickup truck or an ambulance. With over 1 million units produced, not including pick-up and van variations.
Until Poland entered the European Union in 2004, the Polonez was sold in other countries and was popular in Poland.
The car’s name is derived from the Polish dance polonaise, and was chosen through a reader poll conducted by the weekly Życie Warszawy.
