It is important to know how much oil your car needs and to put the correct amount in it. This is because if you do not have enough oil, it can cause damage to your engine. The same goes if you have too much oil.
Engines need oil to help them run smoothly and prevent damage. Oil also helps to cool the engine and to lubricate the moving parts. This keeps the engine running cooler and prevents its components from wearing down.
In this guide, we will explain how you can easily find out how much oil your car needs and what the consequences are if you put too little or too much in.
Ways You Can Find Out How Much Oil Your Car Needs
To start, there are 5 main ways you can find out how much oil your car needs.
1. Check Your Owner’s Manual

The first thing you can do is check your owner’s manual to find out how much oil your car needs. This information should be included in the manual, usually close to the oil fill cap.
Most cars need between 4 and 8 quarts of oil. The amount of oil your car needs depends on the make, model, and year of your vehicle.
2 Go Online and Check Out Some Car Resources
If you don’t have your owner’s manual or can’t find it, don’t worry. There are other ways to figure out how much oil your car needs. A quick online search will reveal a number of resources that can help you.
Normally, you would go to a website like Advanced Auto Parts and and enter your vehicle information. This will bring up a list of oil types and quantities that are recommended for your car.
There will be options to search by year/make/model, license plate, or VIN.
Check The Fitment Details
Once you have found a list of recommended oil types, next you will want to check the fitment details.

This is important because not all vehicles use the same type of oil or have the same requirements.
Some cars need synthetic oil, others might need high-mileage oil, and some may require other specialized oils. Make sure you are using the correct type of oil for your car.
3 – Take It To A Mechanic or Auto Shop
If you’re not sure how much oil your car needs, you can also take it to a mechanic or auto shop. A professional will be able to easily look at your vehicle and tell you what sort of oil your car needs and what type of oil is best for it.
Now that you know how to find out how much oil your car needs, it’s time to learn about what can happen if you don’t have enough oil or if you have too much oil in your car.
4 – Estimate by the number of cylinders in your car
One easy way to estimate how much oil your car needs is by the number of cylinders it has. Generally, most cars have between 4 and 8 cylinders, so you can just use this as a general rule of thumb.

For example, if you have a 4-cylinder engine in your car, it’ll take about 3.5 -4.5 liters of oil.
For a 6 cylinder engine, it’ll take about 4.5 – 5.5 liters of oil.
For an 8 cylinder engine, it’ll about take 5.5 – 7.5 liters of oil.
5 – Use a dip stick
Most modern cars will have a digital indicator to tell you how much oil you have in your engine. But for older models, you will need to use a the good old fashioned dip stick to really find out.

Another easy way to find out how much oil your car needs is by using a dipstick. This method is simple and straightforward, so it’s a good option if you are in a hurry or don’t want to do any research.
Just pop open the hood of your car and locate the oil dipstick. Dipsticks are usually located next to your oil cap. You will see a dip stick head that you can pull out, which will show you how much oil is in your engine.
There are usually two markings on the dipstick, which will tell you the safe minimum and maximum oil levels. As long as your oil level is between these two marks, you’re good to go.
If it’s below the minimum mark, then you will need to add oil to your car.
What Happens to Your Car If You Don’t Have Enough Engine Oil
If your car doesn’t have enough oil, it can cause a number of problems. First, the engine will overheat more easily because there is no oil to help cool it down.
The lack of lubrication can also cause friction between the engine’s moving parts. This can cause serious damage to the engine and may even lead to a total engine failure.
Most vehicles can run a quart low on oil for a short time without any major problems.
The startup stage is the most critical time for any car , and when the engine is cold it tends to pull more oil out of the crankcase.
If you notice an oil warning light on your dashboard, it’s crucial that you check your car’s oil level right away.
To avoid this problem, make sure to always keep enough oil in your vehicle and change it regularly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
What Happens If You Have Too Much Oil in Your Car
On the other hand, if you have too much oil in your car, it can also cause problems. For one thing, it can make the engine run too hot and can cause serious damage.
Also, too much oil can make it harder to start your engine or disrupt the way your car drives.
If there is an excessive amount of engine oil in the crankcase, it can also cause oil to leak out. This can be a fire hazard and is something you will want to avoid. When there is too much engine oil in the crankcase, the oil pump and crankshaft aerate and whip it into a froth. It effectively turns the engine’s moving parts into one large oil pump, with the oil pump’s intake sucking up a lot of air in addition to the oil.
So if you want to keep your car running smoothly and prevent damage, it’s important to know how much oil your car needs and to put that amount in it.
I have a 2015 volvo xc70 T6 with engine #6304T4 the manual with the car says oil capacity with filter is 7.18 quarts or 6.8L.
The volvo dealer says the correct amount with filter is 8.4 quarts and it is just under 1/2 inch over last mark on oil dipstick. They have told me on many times that is the new correct amount. Your site is either incorrect or volvo is wrong. Can you please let me know as I do not want the engine to be damaged by excess oil filling.
Hi Roge
The information we have on our site is straight from the manuals of all makes and models. If you’ve been advised by Volvo to put more than the capacity of the engine, then feel free to follow that advice, but I would always go with what it officially says in the manual.
